Become a Governor at Sutton College

We are looking for individuals with a passion for education, strong business acumen and enthusiasm to join our Governing Body.

Sutton College has been at the centre of the community for over 50 years. We have in excess of 3,000 learners from all walks of life, enrolled in over 1,000 courses covering a broad curriculum which includes GCSEs, vocational courses, apprenticeships, family-based education as well as crafts, languages and a whole lot more besides.

Volunteering as a Governor is a great way to contribute to the community, meet new people and improve the lives of our learners. You will develop transferable skills whilst putting existing skills and experiences to good use. The Governing Body is keen to promote diversity of its membership across all protected characteristics.

We are specifically seeking to strengthen the team with candidates with current experience in a senior role within leading regional, national or multinational employers, or in a similar role with a major employer representative body. These skills would include, but not be limited to:

♦ Financial management

♦ Marketing and Communication

♦ Organisational culture and managing change

♦ Further/adult education and quality expertise

♦ HR/personnel

Candidates must be committed to the College’s vision and have the ability to work in a team to make collective decisions. Previous experience as a governor or trustee at an adult education college would be an advantage, but is not a prerequisite.

Our Governing Body meets twice a term, in the early evenings – usually in person at the College’s site at the top of St Nicholas Way – but sometimes online too. This is a voluntary (unpaid) role, but expenses can be offered, where relevant. As far as time commitment is concerned, it would be approximately 50 hours over the academic year.

If you think you might have the skills, time and background we are looking for, please complete the form below by the closing date of 28/10/24. The College will consider all applications and those shortlisted would normally be invited to visit the College as part of the appointment process.
