Develop and improve your badminton techniques and playing ability to make the most of badminton as part of a health and wellbeing activity regime.

What are the overall aims of the course?

The overall aim of the course is for you to develop and maintain your badminton techniques, skills and knowledge, helping you to develop your playing ability and your whole body flexibility, tone, strength, endurance and co-ordination. The course also aims to promote the health benefits of long term adherence to an active lifestyle through regular participation in exercise and sporting activities at a level suited to the individual and their distinctive needs, aspirations and goals.

What will I learn on the course?

You will learn:

The importance of a warm-up and cool down
The basic forehand and backhand grips and their use for racket head control.

You will learn the correct technique for a range of attacking shots including:

Smashes
Drop shots
Net Kills
Pushes
Drives
Lifts

You will learn the correct technique for a range of defensive shots including:

Lifts
Drives
Blocks to the net
Pushes
Defending against drop shots

You will learn to play and score a doubles game
You will be introduced to the 3 basic tactical games situations:
Attacking
Defending
Moving from one to the other

Play tactical games in both mixed and level doubles including Level doubles attack and defence and Mixed doubles attack and defence.

You will also take part in a range of mini leagues and competitions at various times during the term

Are there any entry requirements?

This course is suitable for beginners as well as well as students who are returning to the sport after a break and wish to recap on the basics.

This class may include a mixed level of ability/experience from students who are beginners to people returning to badminton who were competent players in the past but would like to recap and further develop their badminton playing and includes students who have completed this course before and are happy to continue at this level to further develop their badminton skills and playing ability.

Do I need to attend a course approval interview/assessment before I can join this course?

NO

How will I be taught?

Classroom based (including practical work where applicable)
Extending Learning through VERA (Virtual Education Resources & Activities)

Practical class work, following initial tutor demonstration, explanation and instruction. General class guidance is given by the tutor with some one-to-one guidance where appropriate.

How will my progress be checked?

Informal assessment in class
Practical friendly competitive matchplay
Tutor observation
Continuous informal assessment methods are used by the tutor to monitor students’ progress and involve observation, question and answer and discussion activities.

What do I need to bring with me to class?

Badminton racket
Badminton shoes or suitable Indoor training shoes
Sports Clothing – allowing freedom of movement. Also layers to put on and take off depending on hall temperature.
Bottle of Water

Continue with this badminton class to further develop/maintain your performance level.
Progress to the improvers/intermediate badminton class at Sutton College or progress to an alternative class with another provider. Please discuss options with the tutor.
