Develop and improve your ballet technique and ability to make the most of ballet as part of a health and wellbeing activity regime.
What are the overall aims of the course?
To engage in the activity of classical ballet and gain a deeper understanding of the basic fundamentals of classical ballet.
To be able to demonstrate a variety of classical ballet steps.
To be able to demonstrate and perform a choreographed variation from a series of classical pieces of ballet repertoire.
The course also aims to promote the health benefits of long term adherence to an active lifestyle through regular participation in exercise at a level suited to the individual and their distinctive needs, aspirations and goals.
What will I learn on the course?
You will learn:
A range of simple classical ballet barre exercises.
A range of simple classical ballet centre practice exercises such as port de bras, pirouettes and allegro.
To develop and perform a series of short dance phrases based on elements of classical ballet repertoire.
To develop co-ordination and balance skills.
To develop your fitness levels.
Through the course, you will also meet new people & friends and have fun in a learning environment.
Through the course you will also rediscover the music associated with classical ballet repertoire.
To maintain the correct postural alignment while performing basic movement patterns.
Improve your core strength, muscular control, flexibility, strength, breathing techniques and posture.

Are there any entry requirements?
Some previous ballet experience is required. This is an all abilities class and will include a mixed level of ability and experience from students who have completed a term or two of beginners ballet to students who are returning to ballet after a break with the intention of using it to regain and/or maintain their fitness levels.
Do I need to attend a course approval interview/assessment before I can join this course?
How will I be taught?
Classroom based (including practical work where applicable)
Extending Learning through VERA (Virtual Education Resources & Activities)
Practical class work, following initial tutor demonstration, explanation and instruction. General class guidance is given by the tutor with some one-to-one guidance where appropriate. Students are encouraged to select a few exercises to practice at home to promote and maintain their development.
How will my progress be checked?

Continuous informal assessment methods are used by the tutor to monitor students’ progress and involve observation, questions and answers and discussion activities.
Does the course have any features I should be aware of?
Participants are encouraged to work at their own level (which may vary from week to week).
It is advised students prepare for safe practice by not eating a large meal for at least 2 hours before the class, however you may wish to eat something small before the class to provide you with an energy boost.
What do I need to bring with me to class?
Please wear loose fitting comfortable clothing suited to exercising e.g. tracksuit etc.
Please wear suitable footwear. Ballet Shoes will be available from your local dance wear shop. If you are in doubt about the correct shoes to purchase, please come along to the first class where the tutor will be able to give you further advice directly.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
Additional Learning Support (ALS) may be made available for learners who, at the time of assessment and/or enrolment, declare a difficulty or disability that may affect their learning. Our service can support learners in English, maths, who are dyslexic, deaf or hearing impaired or who have evidence of other medical issues impacting on learning. Learners can also find information about financial and child care support from the Customer Enquiry Centre.
You will be issued with a Sutton College e-mail address, which will give you access to Sutton College’s Virtual Learning Environment, called VERA.

What can I do after the course has finished?
Continue in this All Abilities class to maintain your performance level.
