What are the overall aims of the course?
In this session we will examine early British settlements in the Caribbean from the 1600s onwards. We will explore relationships between Britain and other European powers including Spain and France, and their impact on settlements; warfare, indentured servitude and shipment to the Caribbean islands as a mode of punishment; Britain’s relationship with Africa and the African slave market; and the creation of a ‘triangular trade’ between Britain, Africa and the Caribbean.
This session may be attended individually, or as a series of five on Britain and the Caribbean. It will include pictures, group discussions, and a chance to ask any questions you may have about Britain and the Caribbean.
