Would you like to communicate with deaf friends or family in British Sign Language? Do you have deaf colleagues at work or deaf customers/service users who you meet in your job role? Have you already completed a British Sign Language Level 2 Certificate and would like to develop your skills further? On this course, you will work towards a British Sign Language Level 3 Certificate, accredited by the awarding body Signature.

Purpose of Course

,

The purpose of this course is to communicate in British Sign Language, for professional reasons and/or personal enjoyment. Completion of this course will lead to a British Sign Language Level 3 Certificate from Signature.

On completion of this course, you will be able to-

  • Understand a range of introductions, greetings, thanks, apologies and leave taking.
  • Understand a range of signed and other non-verbal cultural conventions.
  • Distinguish between formal and informal language.
  • Understand enquiries or requests.
  • Identify some relevant details and the general meaning of presentations, discussions and conversations.
  • Accurately identify whether events mentioned are in the past, present, future, or could happen in certain circumstances.
  • Understand opinions and distinguish them from fact.
  • Follow instructions and advice, understanding their priority and urgency.
  • Understand different ways to express feelings, needs, preferences and humour.
  • Recognise most common variations in articulation/regional forms.

What level is this course & what skills do I need?

This course is Level 3. You need to have achieved a British Sign Language Level 2 Certificate from Signature to join this course.

Is a course approval interview/assessment required?

To be considered for a place on this course, you are required to attend a Course Approval session to ensure this course is suitable for you. You may be asked to complete a test/tests.

To achieve the qualification, students must successfully complete assessments/exams in each of the three areas outlined above.

If students do not pass their exam at their first attempt, they will have the opportunity of paying for re-sits, providing they notify our Exams Department within one month of receiving their below pass result. All re-sits must be taken within three months of the end of the course. Re-sits beyond this time may not be possible.
