Course Information

What are the overall aims of the course?

Complete beginners and more advanced students can join our sewing workshop on a Wednesday morning. Learn to use the sewing machine and make your first garment, or bring along your current project and sew with other sewing enthusiasts.

What will I learn on the course?

How to take measurements and adapt a commercial pattern for a personal fit.
Set up and work a sewing machine and over-locker.
How to follow the instructions to a commercial pattern and work independently.
Develop the sewing techniques needed to complete a simple garment.
Gain basic and further understanding of garment construction.
Develop your skill set to complete more advanced garments.

Are there any entry requirements?

You will need a good understanding of English to follow written and verbal instructions. You will also need basic maths skills for measuring and set out.

Do I need to attend a course approval interview/assessment before I can join this course?

No

How will I be taught?

Tutor guidance at 1 to 1 level, plus group demonstrations of basic techniques.
Classroom based (including practical work where applicable)
Extending Learning through VERA (Virtual Education Resources & Activities)

Informal assessment in class

Does the course have any features I should be aware of?

No

What do I need to bring with me to class?

As this is a practical course, you will need to bring your own sewing kit, e.g. scissors, pins, needles, thread, tape measure etc. as well as paper and pen for notes. If you are a competent sewer or have been on the course previously then you can bring some of your own work with you.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

Additional Learning Support (ALS) may be made available for learners who, at the time of assessment and/or enrolment, declare a difficulty or disability that may affect their learning. Our service can support learners in English, maths, who are dyslexic, deaf or hearing impaired or who have evidence of other medical issues impacting on learning. Learners can also find information about financial and child care support from the Customer Enquiry Centre.
