Course Information

Are you interested in a career in Counselling? Or do you have a job where you have to help people with their problems? This course is the ideal way to develop your basic counselling skills which you can use in work and everyday life and is the start of a pathway to becoming a qualified counsellor.

What are the overall aims of the course?

A basic introduction for those interested in counselling

What will I learn on the course?

You will learn about Active Listening, using non- verbal communication/Bodylanguage/eye
contact/tone of voice, Open & Closed questions.

You will explore the 3 Main Approaches to Counselling:

Person Centred traditions/ Psychodynamic/Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

You will consider the impact of issues around difference in working with clients and explore the meaning of stereotyping/assumptions/working in a non-judgemental manner.

How will I be taught?

Classroom based (including practical work where applicable)
Group discussion, Q&As, role play, paired work.

Does the course have any features I should be aware of?

This qualification is not suitable for those who are currently in a state of severe emotional difficulty and/or severe psychological confusion. We need to ensure that all potential candidates are made aware of the nature of the course, and in particular that the course involves experiential elements that will involve some personal disclosure and associated personal developmental activities.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

Additional Learning Support (ALS) may be made available for learners who, at the time of assessment and/or enrolment, declare a difficulty or disability that may affect their learning.
