What are the overall aims of the course?
Join us in a dancing tour of the globe, learning the steps and techniques of folk dances from around the world in a friendly, fun and relaxed atmosphere.
Enjoy slow, fast, simple or more complex dances in circle, line, couple and set formations.
There’s no need to bring a partner.
The course also aims to promote the health benefits of long term adherence to an active lifestyle through regular participation in dance exercise at a level suited to the individual and their distinctive needs, aspirations and goals.
What will I learn on the course?
You will learn to:
Dance the huge variety of steps used in this type of dance.
Dance a variety of traditional folk dances from all around the world.
Your tutor will give you more information about the course at your first session
Are there any entry requirements?
All are welcome and the course is perfect for beginners and those with some knowledge of folk dancing. The class will consist of a mixed group, some students new to the subject while others will be returning to this class to continue their development and/or maintain the health benefits they get from taking part.
The ability to understand verbal instructions and follow demonstrations is essential.
Do I need to attend a course approval interview/assessment before I can join this course?
How will I be taught?
Classroom based (including practical work where applicable)
Extending Learning through VERA (Virtual Education Resources & Activities)
Practical class work, follows initial tutor demonstration, explanation and instruction. General class guidance is given by the tutor with some one-to-one guidance where appropriate. There will be the opportunity to participate in events outside the class with other members of the group and the tutor will advise you of these opportunities as the course progresses.
How will my progress be checked?

Practical work/activity and performance
Continuous guidance including verbal feedback will be given to the class on performance and progress. This will be supported by individual developmental feedback from the tutor where appropriate to enable individual learners to improve/correct their performance. Towards the end of the course, both you and your tutor will reflect on the progress you have made and you will have the opportunity to comment and provide feedback via the online course evaluation process.
Does the course have any features I should be aware of?
This is a physically active course but does allow students to work at their own level.
To get the most from the course, you need to be able to:
Follow spoken instructions.
Understand the number concepts of rhythms and recognise the differences between different rhythms.
Work and perform individually, in small groups and as a whole class.
What do I need to bring with me to class?
Suitable footwear: low-heeled or flat shoes (strapped on to foot)
Optional bottle of water with a secure lid.
How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
Additional Learning Support (ALS) may be made available for learners who, at the time of assessment and/or enrolment, declare a difficulty or disability that may affect their learning. Our service can support learners in English, maths, who are dyslexic, deaf or hearing impaired or who have evidence of other medical issues impacting on learning. What can I do after the course has finished?
Continue with this mixed ability class to further develop your performance level.
Progress to an alternative class with another provider or become a Member of the Society for International Folk Dancing, who run courses and social events. Please discuss options with the tutor.
