Course Information

What are the overall aims of the course?

You will learn how to use a range of techniques and small hand and power tools to achieve a multitude of fixings, repairs, maintenance and decorating jobs around the home.

What will I learn on the course?

Use a hand saw to cut wood.
Use screws and fixings to attach items to walls etc.
Work safely with and around electric fittings.
Replace electric sockets.
Replace a 3 pin plug.
Repair and replace taps, radiators and WC’s.
Tile kitchens and bathrooms.
Prepare walls, ceilings and woodwork for decoration.
Paint walls, ceilings and woodwork.
Apply wallpaper to walls

Are there any entry requirements?

This is a basic DIY course for students of all abilities – all are welcome.

Do I need to attend a course approval interview/assessment before I can join this course?

NO

How will I be taught?

Classroom based (including practical work where applicable)
Extending Learning through VERA (Virtual Education Resources & Activities)
Practical class work, following initial tutor demonstration, explanation and instruction.
General class guidance is given by the tutor with some one-to-one guidance where appropriate.
Students are encouraged to undertake a basic DIY project at home when competent.
Handouts and other materials are available from the tutor or online.

How will my progress be checked?

Informal assessment in class
Tutor observation
Continuous informal assessment methods are used by the tutor to monitor students’ progress and involve observation, questions and answers and discussion activities.

Does the course have any features I should be aware of?

This course is suitable for complete beginners.

What do I need to bring with me to class?

You will need a pen and paper to take notes for the first session.
Information regarding what you will need for the next session will be given at the end of each session.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

Additional Learning Support (ALS) may be made available for learners who, at the time of assessment and/or enrolment, declare a difficulty or disability that may affect their learning.
