General Information
Do you need a Level 1 English Functional Skills qualification for employment or higher education purposes? This Fast Track course enables learners who already have a high level of English to achieve their qualification in just 6 months of intensive teaching. This course is 2.5 hours per week and requires a high level of commitment but may help you to reach your goals quickly.
This ONLINE course aims to develop basic study skills as well as the reading, writing and speaking and listening skills needed to become more confident in English. It is aimed at those who have good Reading and Writing skills already but still have some issues with composition, spelling, punctuation and grammar.
This course is also aimed at those who are confident with IT and will be using Google Classrooms and Googlemeets for online learning. There will be no face-to-face learning but you will need to come to the college for some dates at the end of the course for onsite exams.
What will I learn on this course?
Our English Skills courses are aimed at those whose first Language is English or those who have already gained an ESOL Level 1 qualification. If you do not have either of these, we have a wide range of ESOL classes to cater for all needs.

You will be introduced to a number of techniques that will help you to read and write with more confidence.
You will find out how to recognise and lay out different types of documents, such as letters and magazine articles, with increasing accuracy and confidence.
You will be shown how to read and understand a range of specialist words in context.
You will be shown how to use complex and compound sentences.
You will be shown how to use a range of punctuation correctly (e.g. full stops, question marks, exclamation marks, commas, possessive apostrophes)You will be encouraged to expand your vocabulary.
You will have opportunities to develop your speaking and listening skills and discussion skills.
You may have the opportunity to gain an English Functional Skills Edexcel qualification at Level 1.

What level is this course & what skills do I need?
At course approval, we will assess your literacy levels and place you in the appropriate class.
We have courses available from Entry 1 (very basic) up to Level 2 (equivalent to GCSE level). Level 2 is necessary for many jobs and also for entry to Higher Education.
How do I enrol?
To be considered for a place on this course, you are required to complete an online course Assessment to ensure this course is suitable for you.

Note: 100% attendance is expected on this course. The College understands, though, that you may have to miss a class due to circumstances beyond your control. However, If your attendance falls below 85%, it will be necessary for the College to withdraw you from the course and discuss with you when you might be in a position to start the course again at a time more convenient for you.
Once you have started your course, your tutor will assess your needs and ability and will decide whether a Functional Skills English qualification would be right for you or whether different programme of learning would better suit.
