What is this course about?

,

Working with fabric and textiles is an incredibly rewarding experience. This course suits anyone who already has some sewing experience and would like to design and make a garment from start to finish within a short period of time.

,

You will make a garment, by learning to adapt a pattern to your own design and measurements. A dress, skirt, trouser, blouse or shirt. This short course will pull a range of skills together so you can create something fantastic within the allocated timescale. You will learn how to cost, price, market and monetise your skills. This will open the door for you to progress into further learning for a career in garment alterations or fashion design.

What will we cover?

The course aims to:

  • Enable you to work safely and effectively using tools, equipment and materials.
  • Understand the characteristics of materials required to make a garment.
  • Be able to plan, prepare and construct materials for your garment.
  • Give you the opportunity to learn and explore new skills and techniques.
  • You will learn how to correctly cost your garments, set prices, market, promote and sell your items.

What level is this course & what skills do I need?

,

This course is for those who have some previous knowledge and wish to extend their skills in this area of work. Must be able to use a sewing machine and have completed sewing projects before.

Learners must demonstrate a basic level of literacy and numeracy.

,

The ability to read and understand written tasks and carry out basic costing calculations are also necessary.

There will be 2 - 4 hours of homework set each week on average

First lesson - bring along images of a garment you would like to make and some fabric samples. Do not buy pattern or fabric, you can buy them after the first lesson when you have discussed your ideas with your tutor.
