Course Information

What are the overall aims of the course?

In this fun-filled class, you will learn to dance with confidence and panache in authentic flamenco style. You will learn about the exotic and multicultural origins of flamenco, learn a few Spanish phrases, and have the chance to dance a short fiesta-style routine in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.

What will I learn on the course?

You will learn how to:

Dance the fundamental steps of Flamenco Dancing e.g. basic footwork and co-ordination
Combine basic Flamenco steps into short combinations
Perform an entire routine to a piece of music 1-2 minutes long
Develop co-ordination, fitness and physical presence
Describe the multicultural origins of Flamenco
Recognise and use some of the Spanish words and phrases used in Flamenco

Are there any entry requirements?

This course is designed for beginners as well as for students with experience who want to further develop their flamenco dancing ability before progressing to an intermediate class. The class will consist of a mixed group, those new to the subject and people returning to this class to continue their development.

How will I be taught?

Classroom based (including practical work where applicable)
Extending Learning through VERA (Virtual Education Resources & Activities)

Practical class work, follows initial tutor demonstration, explanation and instruction. General class guidance is given by the tutor with some one-to-one guidance where appropriate. Students are encouraged to make and/or film the tutor demonstrating sections of the dance to review at home.

How will my progress be checked?

Informal assessment in class
Tutor observation
Continuous informal assessment methods are used by the tutor to monitor students’ progress and involve observation, questions and answers and discussion activities.

Does the course have any features I should be aware of?

This is a physically active course but the class is flexible to allow students to work at their own level.

To get the most from the course, you need to be able to:

Follow spoken instructions.
Understand the number concepts of rhythms and recognise the differences between different rhythms.
Work and perform individually, in small groups and as a whole class.

What do I need to bring with me to class?

There’s no need to bring a partner, but do bring an optional bottle of water with a secure lid.

Please wear shoes or boots with a small strong heel – no stilettos, no sandals, no trainers and not barefeet please. (You can invest in Flamenco shoes/skirt (women) and boots/waistcoat (men) once you’ve decided to pursue a longer course; tutor will give information and advice.)

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
