Course Information

What are the overall aims of the course?

You will be introduced to a range of basic flower arranging techniques to design and make simple arrangements for weddings and Special Anniversaries

This will include:

Designing and making a Bridal bouquet, floral items for Bridesmaids
Designing and making a celebration table arrangement
Use wiring techniques for making Buttonhole, Corsage and Headdress designs
Select suitable plant materials to use and learn how to present and care for the finished items

What will I learn on the course?

You will learn how to:

Design and make a Bridal Hand tied Bouquet
Design and make celebration table arrangements
Design and make a Buttonhole and Corsage or headdress
Design small table arrangements for a Wedding Receptions
Explore options for Bridesmaid’s flowers Pomanders, flower baskets, Wands and Alice bands

Are there any entry requirements?

This is a basic flower arranging course and all are welcome, no previous experience required.
Ability to understand verbal instructions and follow demonstrations is required.

Do I need to attend a course approval interview/assessment before I can join this course?

No

How will I be taught?

Classroom based (including practical work where applicable)
Practical class work, following initial tutor demonstration, explanation, instruction and discussion.
General class guidance is given by the tutor with some one-to-one guidance where appropriate.
Students are also encouraged to undertake basic projects at home.
Handouts and other materials are available from the tutor or online. Extending learning through VERA (Virtual Education Resources & Activities)

How will my progress be checked?

Informal assessment in class
Tutor observation
Continuous informal assessment methods are used by the tutor to monitor students’ progress and involve observation, question and answer and discussion activities.
Students are also encouraged to keep a personal portfolio of floral designs made in class

Does the course have any features I should be aware of?

You are required to purchase your own flowers/foliage for floral projects every week, in the region of £10 - £15.

Some containers and floral foam may be purchased in class at Wholesale price if required

What do I need to bring with me to class?

Note book and pen, Scissors
Flowers/Foliage/Container
Camera
Container to transport floral designs home safely

For the first session, please bring Flowers/Foliage to make a Hand tied Bridal bouquet
10-15 roses, Bear grass or medium sized leaves for the collar
Satin ribbon and pearl headed pins for the handle

What can I do after the course has finished?

Enrol on further flower arranging courses at Sutton College.
Consider enrolling on the Floristry Foundation course or on the Level 2 Certificate in Floristry course or consider work experience in a florist shop. Please discuss options with the tutor.
