Course Information

Develop your knowledge and experience of a range of exercise activities and make the most of this exercise class as a workout for both the body and the brain as part of a health and wellbeing exercise regime.

What are the overall aims of the course?

To develop and maintain exercise techniques, skills and knowledge to help to develop and maintain whole body flexibility, tone, strength, endurance, balance and co-ordination. The course also aims to promote the health benefits of long term adherence to an active lifestyle through regular participation in exercise at a level suited to the individual and their distinctive needs, aspirations and goals. You will also develop your knowledge of the body and how it works and develop an understanding of the importance of keeping active.

What will I learn on the course?

Perform a series of safe and effective tutor led exercises based on individual targets and goals.
Improve and maintain joint mobility.
Increase balance and co-ordination.
Improve and maintain muscle strength and endurance.
Experience a sense of wellbeing and fun with the social interaction of group exercise.

You will learn to:

Encourage weight control, manage/improve health related conditions
Improve flexibility and mobility.
Increase strength and endurance.
Improve posture, balance and co-ordination.
Build aerobic capacity of heart and lungs.
Improve mental and physical agility.
Ease pain and tension in muscles and joints.

Are there any entry requirements?

None, this is an All Abilities class and will include a mixed level of ability from physically capable students new to the subject to students who have completed the course before and are happy to work at this level.

A gentle but challenging class to suit the more active individual.

How will I be taught?

Classroom based (including practical work where applicable)
Extending Learning through VERA (Virtual Education Resources & Activities)

Practical class work, following initial tutor demonstration, explanation and instruction. General class guidance is given by the tutor with some one-to-one guidance where appropriate. Students are encouraged to select a few exercises to practice at home to promote and maintain their development.

Handouts and other materials are available from the tutor or online.

How will my progress be checked?

Informal assessment in class
Practical work/activity and performance
Tutor observation
Continuous informal assessment methods are used by the tutor to monitor students’ progress and involve observation, question and answer and discussion activities.

Does the course have any features I should be aware of?

Participants are encouraged to work at their own level (which may vary from week to week).

It is advised students prepare for safe practice by not eating a large meal for at least 2 hours before the class, however you may wish to eat something small before the class to provide you with an energy boost.

What do I need to bring with me to class?

Please wear loose fitting comfortable clothing suited to exercising e.g. tracksuit etc.
Please wear suitable indoor training shoes (soles are non-marking) that grip your foot securely.
Optional bottle of water with a secure cap

All class exercise equipment including mats will be provided in the class.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

Additional Learning Support (ALS) may be made available for learners who, at the time of assessment and/or enrolment, declare a difficulty or disability that may affect their learning. Our service can support learners in English, maths, who are dyslexic, deaf or hearing impaired or who have evidence of other medical issues impacting on learning. Learners can also find information about financial and child care support from the Customer Enquiry Centre.

Continue in this All Abilities class to maintain your performance level.
