What are the overall aims of the course?
The Germans occupied France in the period 1940 – 1944. In this session we will examine life in the occupied and ‘free’ zones; the Vichy government of Marshall Petain, and collaboration; Charles de Gaulle’s war contributions; the creation and activities of the French Resistance and the dangers associated with resistance; Klaus Barbie and the Gestapo in France; and the treatment of collaborators and resistance fighters in the post-war period.
This session will include photographs, group discussions, and a chance to ask any questions you may have about life in Occupied France.
