You just know the absolute basics of computing and want to move on? Then why not start off by developing your Word Processing skills.
What are the overall aims of the course?
In this course, we build on the basic skills learnt in First Steps (or equivalent). As well as consolidating and building your confidence, we will teach you new formatting techniques for Word Processing, moving on from what you already know.
What will I learn on the course?
To enter and edit text and format it appropriately, for example align paragraphs, change font type, size and colour.
To use bullet points and numbering
To insert pictures and symbols
To adjust page margins and orientation
To save, open and print documents
Are there any entry requirements?
This class is suitable for students who have achieved First Steps Word Processing or the equivalent.
Do I need to attend a course approval interview/assessment before I can join this course?
How will I be taught?
Classroom based (including practical work where applicable)
Teaching is initially by whole class demonstration. Practice exercises are then supported by individual demonstration. Handouts with instructions are provided. Students work at their own pace. Homework is set to help reinforce learning.
How will my progress be checked?
Informal assessment in class by the tutor
Does the course have any features I should be aware of?
No, though students should make us aware, in advance, of specific physical problems such as very poor vision or difficulties with small motor control.
What do I need to bring with me to class?
Pen or pencil. Students may want to bring in a memory stick to transfer work from class to home, once they are confident of being able to open files on it at home.
How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
Additional Learning Support (ALS) may be made available for learners who, at the time of assessment and/or enrolment, declare a difficulty or disability that may affect their learning. Our service can support learners in English, maths, who are dyslexic, deaf or hearing impaired or who have evidence of other medical issues impacting on learning. Learners can also find information about financial and child care support from the Customer Enquiry Centre.
You will be issued with a Sutton College e-mail address, which will give you access to Sutton College’s Virtual Learning Environment, called VERA.
There is free guest Wi-Fi available in the College
Can I receive advice and guidance about further education opportunities and careers?
Yes. To find out more about what may be available to you please contact our Advice Team. See www.suttoncollege.ac.uk/college/advice-centre
What can I do after the course has finished?
After the Next Steps course, students may go on to do First Steps – PowerPoint, Publisher & Excel. Also there are basic level courses on using the Internet, email, iPhones, iPads or equivalent. Word Processing Intermediate (Level 1) is another possibility.
