Course Information

What are the overall aims of the course?

This course is a follow up to the basic introduction where you will further develop your knowledge of domestic plumbing systems and learn how to perform a variety of plumbing tasks with a view to undertaking a mini home improvement project.

What will I learn on the course?

You will learn how to:

Plumb in bathroom sanitary ware
Plumb in a washing machine
Install a shower
Fit an outside tap
Pipe up a heating system

Are there any entry requirements?

Students must have completed the ‘Basic Introduction’ to plumbing course before enrolling on the improver’s course.

Do I need to attend a course approval interview/assessment before I can join this course?

NO

How will I be taught?

Classroom based (including practical work where applicable)
Extending Learning through VERA (Virtual Education Resources & Activities)
Practical class work, following initial tutor demonstration, explanation and instruction.
General class guidance is given by the tutor with some one-to-one guidance where appropriate.
Students are encouraged to undertake a basic DIY project at home when competent.
Handouts and other materials are available from the tutor or online.

How will my progress be checked?

Informal assessment in class
Tutor observation
Continuous informal assessment methods are used by the tutor to monitor students’ progress and involve observation, questions and answers and discussion activities.

Does the course have any features I should be aware of?

Students must have completed the ‘Basic Introduction’ to plumbing course before enrolling on the improver’s course.

What do I need to bring with me to class?

Note pad and pen, blow torch.
Adjustable spanner, pipe wrench, cutters would be useful though not essential as there are a limited number of these to be shared amongst learners.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

Additional Learning Support (ALS) may be made available for learners who, at the time of assessment and/or enrolment, declare a difficulty or disability that may affect their learning. Our service can support learners in English, maths, who are dyslexic, deaf or hearing impaired or who have evidence of other medical issues impacting on learning.
