Beautiful 50th Anniversary Commemorative Piece
As part of the commemorations for the 50th anniversary of Sutton College, the milestone has been marked with the design and creation of a beautiful ceramic platter.
Tutor Fay de Winter who has worked at the College since 2005 , created the coiled and thrown platter to celebrate 50 years of lifelong learning. She designed the legacy piece to celebrate the 50 years that the College has been serving its local community. On a personal note she noted that the work was also ‘a fitting tribute, reflecting my journey of creating with clay over 20 years to achieve the skills required to make this piece’.
The platter, with black slip decoration stencilled and embossed was fired in the College’s gas reduction kiln with a shiny white glaze to 1280’C.
Fay teaches various Pottery and Ceramics classes in the bespoke pottery studio on site at Sutton College but has also taught at Morley and other organisations including the V&A. She has a Masters in Contemporary Craft, specialising in ceramics in 2012 and has participated in events and exhibitions around the world.
College Principal Dipa Ganguli OBE said ‘ The 50th platter is beautiful and will live on to celebrate this important College milestone. We are so lucky to have expert, talented tutors like Fay at the College who are respected and well known in their field. We are delighted, privileged and grateful that she has been able to create something to mark this occasion’.
