Inspired Sutton College students to exhibit at Morley Gallery

4 May 2016

Sutton College student work will form part of an exhibition of art and craft inspired by pieces from the Victoria and Albert Museum’s collections and will be exhibited at the Morley Gallery in London from 17 May – 17 June.

The exhibition showcases the results of ‘Inspired by…’ a national arts competition for adult learners originally launched by the V&A and entrusted to Morley Gallery since 2014.

Over 350 submissions were received from adult learners from across the UK, 90 of which have been selected by an esteemed panel of V&A curators for the exhibition.

The talented Sutton College students taking part are Cristine Walden, Donna Foster, Rowena Howell, Ramil Makinano, Joan Prokop, Margaret Sparks, Fran Moffat and Mark Birch and they attend classes in calligraphy, print making, jewellery, pottery, digital media and art.

The works on display will include textiles, fashion and jewellery through to sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, painting, and – new for 2016 – digital media; and draw from an even broader range of artefacts for inspiration.

Highlights include the V&A’s dramatic Chihuly chandelier reimagined as textural felted fabric; menacingly atmospheric linocut prints inspired by 1960s plastic dolls houses; 19th century Indian embroidery updated with the industrial landscape of the Leeds to Liverpool canal; an echoing sound work inspired by Spanish ironmongery; and David Bailey’s famous portrait of Catherine Deneuve, translated into delicate flamingo-pink vessels.

Emmajane Avery, Director of Learning and Visitor Experience at the V&A says: “Inspired by… is now in its seventeenth year and I am delighted that the Victoria and Albert Museum continues to be a part [of it].

“The exhibition always presents an excellent, high-quality snapshot of creative practice amongst adult learners and this year is no exception.”

Inspired by… is open to the public from 17 May – 17 June 2016 at Morley Gallery, London SE1 7HT and entry is free. For further information visit www.morleycollege.ac.uk/gallery or call 020 7450 1826.
