Lunar New Year Celebrations!

A spectacular, community event was held last weekend to celebrate the Lunar New Year.
Over two thousand visited the main Sutton Library where they were able to see a traditional Lion Dance, listen to a Chinese Orchestra, see K-Pop Dancing and more. Stalls around the library included craft activities, food stalls, displays and childrens games. The College was part of the fantastic event, with pottery tutor Yellon Huang and volunteer learners helping children (and a few adults!) to create beautiful clay pieces to mark the occasion.
The event was organised by the Sutton HongKonger Celebration Committee and PAN and visitors included local MP Luke Taylor who opened the event. There was a great community atmosphere, activities and displays for all ages and everyone who attended was treated to a wonderful representation of all aspects of this celebration.
The Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year or Spring Festival, is a significant cultural celebration marking the end of winter and the arrival of a new year.
This is the year of the snake – a year for thoughtful action, renewal and change and is most commonly associated with intelligence, resilience and love.
The date of Lunar New Year differs every year and this year occurs on 29th January.
