SEND Horticulture Learners Volunteer

13 March 2025

A couple of weeks ago, Sutton College SEND Horticulture learners visited the Dr George Rice Community Garden, where they participated in a community volunteering project.

The primary focus of the 2 day trip was to assist in clearing the garden, located in Beech Tree Gardens by St Nicholas Church, in preparation for an upcoming artwork installation. The learners helped to clear ivy, with weeding and litter control too.

The project was coordinated by individuals from Bugler, a local development company and also Jeff Richards from St Nicholas Church who gave all the learners clear instructions and support if needed.

Head of Curriculum & Quality – SEND Brittany Barnes said ‘ The learners demonstrated great enthusiasm and dedication, performing their tasks diligently and effectively. During break times, some learners expressed such enjoyment in their activities that they were reluctant to leave when the time came. This enthusiasm highlighted their engagement and satisfaction with the volunteering experience.’

Bugler said ‘ we coordinated with Sutton College’s SEND students who study landscaping and horticulture. These students were eager to get involved and were instrumental in clearing the garden. Their enthusiasm and hard work added significant value to the project and they thoroughly enjoyed being part of the community effort.’

Jeff Richards, St Nicholas Church said  ‘A huge thank you to Bugler, the council regeneration team, and the adult SEND students from Sutton College for their collaborative effort in clearing the remaining overgrowth. This has created a fantastic blank canvas for future development.’

Overall, the trip was a fantastic opportunity for the College’s SEND Horticulture students to contribute positively to their community while gaining valuable skills and experiences. Bugler, the church and I were extremely impressed with the learners’ work.
