Sutton College & St Nicholas Church Heritage Open Days
Sutton College and St Nicholas Church are once again working together, this time as part of the Heritage Open Days, England’s largest festival of history and culture. The theme for this year’s Heritage Open Days is “People Power: Individuals and their legacy of art”.
St Nicholas Church, located next to the main Sutton College site has beautiful stained glass windows on all sides apart from the North side where they were destroyed by enemy action on the night of 23 September 1940 when a bomb fell in the Rectory garden. The War Damage Commission replaced the broken glass with plain glass was with just a few pieces of the original glass still in the windows on the north side.
Sutton College Art & Craft students designed and created beautiful designs in conjunction with the church and some of the inspiring results of a project to reimagine the windows using different designs can be seen in a presentation at the church.
