Tom Brake MP and best selling author Mary Lawson to get involved in free events for Adult Learners’ Week!

Adult Learners’ Week is a national celebration of lifelong learning where student achievements and hard work are recognised throughout the country. This year, Adult Learners’ Week will be held from 14 – 20 June but activities will be taking place throughout May and June as part of the ‘Festival of Learning’ and SCOLA, Sutton College has a range of special activities on offer.

tombrakeLocal MP Tom Brake will be teaching a free French lesson for people to come along and practice their French skills at SCOLA’s Sutton centre in St Nicholas Way on Friday 13th June at 6pm.

Tom Brake said ‘It’s great to be a part of Adult Learners’ Week – a national celebration of adult learning and achievement. I am proud to work with SCOLA Sutton College, the Borough’s premier provider of adult education for over 40 years, who continue to offer high quality teaching and a huge range of courses to the local community.’

Tom, looking forward to the class in June, said ‘Having been an adult learner in the past, I know how much fun and satisfaction you can get from adult classes and intend proving that case by giving a French lesson. Vive La France.’

Road Ends Chatto cover mock up (2)Former SCOLA student Mary Lawson, author of international bestsellers- Crow Lake and The Other Side of the Bridge will also be visiting the College. Mary will be talking about her third, new novel Road Ends in a session on Tuesday 17th June at SCOLA.

Mary studied at SCOLA for over 20 years and said ‘If I hadn’t had the support and encouragement of the tutor and the other members of the creative writing course I attended, I suspect I would have given up. I would never have had the pleasure and satisfaction of getting a book published.’ She added that ‘It wasn’t just the excellence of the teaching that kept me going, it was also the encouragement and support. The education we got in those classes was the very best kind because it was both inspirational and fun.’

SCOLA have a huge range of activities taking place to celebrate Adult Learners including a week long programme of free taster classes including History topics, Languages and also Business and computing.
