Are you ready to start sewing but don’t know where to begin?

Whether you’ve never touched a sewing machine before or you want to build on your basic skills this course will guide you through every step, making sewing fun, easy, and accessible.

This course will teach you a range of techniques used to make garments, seams, fullness, fastenings, cuffs, pockets. A foundation of skills, which would support higher level courses. Imagine being able to make your own clothing for those special occasions

Start your Sewing Bee journey with us at Sutton College. You will gain a qualification that you can choose to build on or continue to sew just because you enjoy it.
This is a Level 1 Award with NCFE, where learners will have the opportunity to learn and explore new skills and techniques in a friendly learning environment. You will learn how to produce samples of techniques in different fabrics, gaining experience on how to treat different fabrics. You will:

* Make a garment,

* Explore design techniques,

* Be able to work safely and effectively using tools, equipment and materials.

* Understand the characteristics of materials required to make a garment.

* Be able to plan, prepare and sample materials.

This course also covers an introduction to British Values (learning aim 60333984)
No prior knowledge or qualifications are required.

All are welcome from beginners to those who have some previous knowledge and wish to extend their skills in this area of work. Homework includes practising different techniques, so access to a sewing machine is preferable.

Learners will produce a portfolio to gain this qualification, which will include the ability to read and understand written tasks, and carry out basic costing calculations is also necessary.

Learners must demonstrate a basic level of literacy and numeracy.

Additional information

As this is a practical course, you will need to bring your own sewing kit

* Scissors,

* Pins,

* Needles,

* Thread,

* Tape measure,

* Patterns, fabric and notions,

* Paper and pen for notes,

* A4 folder & A4 punched pockets,

* 30cm ruler, Sewing machines and swatch fabrics are provided, Any course enrichment opportunities associated with this class will be listed in your Google classroom.

This course also includes the additional qualification - Ascentis Level 1 Certificate in Employability (Learning Aim: 60085010). This will give you useful skills for the workplace and be a great addition to your CV.
