Does the thought of writing letters, sending emails or filling in forms fill you with dread

Many people struggle with reading and writing for a huge number of reasons. At Sutton College we are committed to providing fun and effective ways to help you improve these everyday skills.

Having a Functional Skills English qualification or a good grade at English GCSE can open so many doors for you, both in employment and for Higher Education and these qualifications are becoming more and more vital in today’s society. On a Sutton College English course you will receive the tuition and support to help you gain your qualification and move forward in your work and/or studies.

Our English Skills courses are aimed at those whose first language is English or those who have already gained an ESOL Level 1 qualification. If you do not have either of these, we have a wide range of ESOL classes to cater for all needs.
At Sutton College, we offer English courses ranging from Entry Level 3 up to GCSE English (Level 2). These courses cover topics such as identifying and spelling everyday words and basic grammar and punctuation right up to more complex topics such as language and organisational features and critical evaluation of texts.

This course also covers an introduction to British Values (learning aim Z0060119)
Courses range from Entry Level to GCSE and you will be given a short online assessment at your Course Approval session. This will determine which level course you will be put onto. If you are hoping to enrol onto an ONLINE course, you must have basic IT skills and for all courses you will need a basic level of English. If English is your second language, you may be referred to an ESOL course (English for Speakers of Other Languages) before you are approved to enrol onto an ESSENTIAL SKILLS course.
