ESOL classes are for those whose first language is not English.

ESOL reading courses are designed to help non-native English speakers develop their reading skills for academic, professional, and everyday purposes.

ESOL courses are for people who want to improve their English and develop their communication skills. Reading, writing, speaking and listening will be covered using relevant and interesting topics related to everyday life in the UK.

Lessons are linked to the ESOL core curriculum and are planned to meet the language needs of the individual learners and to encourage real progress.

There are various levels and after attending an assessment you will be allocated classes appropriately. Please see the ‘How Do I Enrol’ information on how to book an assessment.

The below levels of courses are available. Your assessment session will determine which level is best for you.

ESOL Pre Entry 

Learning Aim: Z0060091

Understand spoken language, for example: simple questions, personal information and instructions

Read and understand simple texts and common signs and symbols.

Write simple sentences

ESOL Speaking and Listening Award (Trinity)

Entry 1 - Learning Aim: 60143022
* Identify the topic of conversation and specific details in a simple narrative/exchange
* Ask for clarification e.g. Can you repeat that please
* Take part in social interaction

Entry 2 - Learning Aim: 60142674
* Identify the topic of conversation and specific details in a straightforward narrative
* Respond to request for information giving appropriate responses
* Take part in a social interaction, state a problem, give an opinion, make plans
* Express views and opinion

Entry 3 - Learning Aim: 60142686
* Speak clearly, using words and sentence stress
* Give a short description using a range of vocabulary
* Respond to a range of questions about familiar topics
* Follow and understand the main points of a discussion on different topics

Level 1 - Learning Aim: 60142807
* Identify key words, phrases and information relevant to the task
* Speak with reasonable speed and rhythm
* Express clearly statements of fact, explanations, instructions and descriptions
* Take part in social and formal interaction and respond in a range of situations e.g. apologising, giving advice, etc

Level 2 - Learning Aim: 60142698
* Listen to, understand and follow multi-step instructions in a range of contexts
* Speak clearly and confidently using pace, intonation, word and sentence stress appropriately
* Deal with difficult situations i.e. complaining, insisting, negotiating
* Use a wide range of formal and informal vocabulary

ESOL Reading Award (Ascentis)

Entry 1 - Learning Aim: 60143265
* Read and understand a short text on a familiar topic
* Recognize basic grammar and punctuation to help understand the text
* Obtain information from key words, common signs and symbols

Entry 2 - Learning Aim: 60142704
* Use knowledge of language to identify the purpose of a text
* Understand and respond to words on forms requesting personal information, e.g. first/surname, address, date of birth, etc.
* Use detailed reading to find specific information

Entry 3 - Learning Aim: 60142716
* Identify key words and phrases commonly used in different types of texts i.e. letters leaflets, forms short articles or reports
* Understand the different purposes of text i.e. to inform, to advertise, to instruct
* Read in detail to obtain specific information

Level 1 - Learning Aim: 60142819
* Identify the main points in a range of text types
* Recognise the purpose of a range of sophisticated punctuation
* Recognise and understand an increasing range of vocabulary associated with different types of text
* Recognise how language and other textual features are used to achieve different purposes i.e. to instruct, explain, describe, persuade

Level 2 - Learning Aim: 60142728
* Identify the main points in a range of text types
* Summarise information from longer documents
* Read and understand technical vocabulary
* Read critically to evaluate information, ideas and opinions from different sources

ESOL Writing Award (Ascentis)

Entry 1 - Learning Aim: 60143277
* Compose simple text to give key personal information and ideas i.e. about family and country.
* Use basic punctuation where required
* Compose simple texts about routine and use simple tenses.

Entry 2 - Learning Aim: 6014273X
* Compose simple text using appropriate format for the task
* Spell correctly common words and personal details appropriate to task
* Use punctuation correctly appropriate to the text.

Entry 3 - Learning Aim: 60142741
* Produce text relevant to purpose and audience with appropriate register
* Use correct sentence punctuation where required
* Spell key words and special interest vocabulary correctly

Level 1 - Learning Aim: 60142790
* Use and spell correctly a wide range of vocabulary appropriate to different audiences
* Identify appropriate register for ask and audience using key features of formal and informal register
* Use appropriate format and features of layout for different types of text i.e. titles, headings, subheadings, etc.

Level 2 - Learning Aim: 60142753
* Use appropriate register for purpose and audience using key features of formal and informal language e.g. type of vocabulary
* Use appropriate structures for formal writing i.e. reports and letters
* Use suitable vocabulary for genre, purpose, audience and content
* Use and spell correctly a wide range of vocabulary

ESOL classes run at the Sutton centre at various times during the week, including some evenings from 7-9pm. Classes generally run for 4 hours (2 classes) per week. The cost is dependent on how many hours you do. Speaking and Listening courses run for 21 weeks, Reading courses run for 12 weeks and Writing courses run for 33 weeks. 


You will be required to take an exam at the end of the course. Your tutor will inform you of the exam date.

This course also covers an introduction to British Values

ESOL classes are for those whose first language is not English.

Make an application by the 'Apply Now' button and book a Course Approval session to ensure this course is suitable for you.

For your Course Approval session, you need to:

  • Bring accepted ID in the form of either a UK passport or printout of your e-visa showing residency status
  • Bring proof of benefit dated within the last 3 months or most recent payslip /tax return if claiming the concessionary fee
  • Ensure you meet all previous educational requirements to attend this course
  • Bring copies of previous exam certificates

Accredited courses at Level 2 or below may be free if you live in a London Borough, earn less than £28,860 (or less than £25,750 outside of a London Borough) or are in receipt of a means tested benefit and are looking for work.
