Floristry – Progress with Ikebana
This course introduces learners to Ikebana, the refined Japanese art of flower arrangement, taught through the internationally recognised Sogetsu School curriculum.

This course introduces learners to Ikebana, the refined Japanese art of flower arrangement, taught through the internationally recognised Sogetsu School curriculum. Ikebana is a mindful, creative, and deeply structured discipline that blends nature, design, and cultural expression. Learners will explore the important principles of line, space, balance, and form to create arrangements that feel both sculptural and elegant. This course is ideal for anyone seeking a calming creative practice, an introduction to Japanese aesthetics, or a new way to work with flowers and connect with nature. The course follows the guidelines and principles of the Sogetsu curriculum from a Sogetsu-certified teacher. Learners will gain hands-on skills, cultural insight, and the confidence to continue creating their own arrangements at home.

Across the 5-week programme, learners will explore key Sogetsu principles through structured, practical lessons:
Week 1 – Introduction to Ikebana & Basic Upright Style (Tatehana)
• Understanding the philosophy and short history of Ikebana
• Introduction to the essential asymmetrical triangle composition. Creating a basic upright arrangement using kenzan and suiban
• Safe handling of tools and materials
Week 2 – Basic Slanting Style (Shatai) & Line Emphasis
• Exploring movement, direction, and asymmetry • Working with branches to create expressive lines
• Understanding balance and negative space
Week 3 – Nageire (Tall Vase Arrangements)
• Techniques for securing stems without floral foam
• Creating natural, flowing compositions
• Understanding vase selection and harmony
Week 4 – Colour, Mass & Variation
• Using colour intentionally
• Creating arrangements with grouped materials
• Developing personal expression within Sogetsu structure
• Exploring leaf work
Week 5 – Free-Style Ikebana - Combining the skills learned across the course
• Exploring deeper creativity while maintaining Sogetsu principles
• Final arrangement either individual or group - Renka style.
• By the end of the course, learners will have created five completed arrangements and gained the foundational skills needed to continue their Ikebana journey

This course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some floral or creative experience. No previous knowledge of Ikebana or floristry is required. Learners should have a basic level of English to follow instructions and participate in group discussion.
All specialist equipment (kenzan, suiban, tall vases) will be provided for classroom use.
Learners may purchase their own kenzan and suiban directly from the tutor if they wish to continue practising at home.
Arrangements will be packaged in sturdy carry-home bags.

Wear sensible closed toed shoes
