Becoming a carer can be a stressful and overwhelming time as circumstances change and responsibilities stack up. Practical advice and support, especially at the beginning of your caring journey, can make a difference by helping you navigate the responsibilities of being a care and also supporting the wellbeing of the person you care for. Whether you are new to caring or want to know more about what’s available in Sutton to support you in your caring role, this course is for you. Learn tips & tricks for caring for someone and hear about the offers and organisations supporting unpaid carers in Sutton.

Each week a health, social care, or charity and voluntary sector organisation supporting unpaid carers in Sutton will bring topics to help you when looking after someone. These topics include
Financial and legal matters & the Carers’ offer (with Citizens Advice Sutton and Sutton Carers Centre)
Looking after yourself (with Sutton Carers Centre and Sutton Talking Therapies)
Useful equipment, gadgets, and adaptations for the home (with Occupational Therapy)
Looking ahead and contingency planning (with Admiral Nurses)

Sessions will last 90 minutes and will be held weekly, with a break for half term.
This course is for unpaid carers in Sutton are looking after a partner, family member, friend or neighbour, with health or social care needs, especially those with new caring responsibilities or those who live with the person they care for.

Learners will need to live at a Sutton postcode, be registered with a Sutton GP, or look after someone living in Sutton.

This is a general course on caring and will not focus on any specific health condition. The course is for carers looking after someone with one or more long-term condition(s) or experiencing frailty.

You do not need any qualifications to attend. You do need an everyday understanding of spoken and written English.

This course sets the foundation for a range of topics important to looking after someone. Personalised advice, such as from Occupational Therapy or financial advisors, may need to be accessed outside of the course. Further information sessions, including 1-to-1 support may be available through other teams at the Council, such as Occupational Therapists, or partner organisations, such as Sutton Carers Centre and Sutton Citizens Advice.
