A chance to try the potter’s wheel! If you have been inspired by the Great Pottery Throw Down or have always wanted to give pottery a go, this short course is ideal for you. Different techniques will be taught by our expert ceramics tutor in our specialised pottery studio. You will learn to make various pieces and then your creations will be ready for you to collect after they have been glazed and fired by our technicians. Alternatively, if you are joining one of our courses in September you can glaze them yourself when you return to the workshop.
This course will provide an introduction to throwing over 3 days. It is suitable for beginners, but it is also a good opportunity for experienced throwers to come and refine their skills.
You will learn to wedge and knead clay, centre, form and shape clay on the potter’s wheel. For more advanced students this is an opportunity to refine technique and iron out problems. Health & Safety and good studio practice guidelines will be supplied. Throwing pots can be messy, an apron or an old shirt to cover your clothes is recommended. As well as developing practical skills, we aim to develop mental and social well being, English, maths, employability and digital skills, and build confidence.

Additional information
Clay used will be charged at £2.50 per kilo before firing. Charges will be in multiples of 500gm therefore there will be a minimum charge of 500gm (£1.25).
The college does not fire clay purchased outside of the college; therefore, you should not bring in your own clay.
We make every attempt to purchase clay at the lowest prices for the best quality however we have no control over these costs and prices will be subject to market changes.
Please bring an apron or an old shirt. Pottery can get messy but it will wash off. A sketchbook is useful but not essential. Tools are provided but some students prefer to use their own.
None. This course is suitable for beginners or experienced throwers and takes a flexible approach to learning styles and abilities
