If you enjoy growing things and would like to build your skills and knowledge of horticulture, this course will take you on a journey of discovery. Harvest your own seeds, understand different soil types, how to plant, when to plant and then grow your own flowers and food. This course is about building skills and confidence whilst increasing knowledge of different sowing and growing techniques, understanding the nature of plant material organic and inorganic and much more.
The course will run for 3 days each week; Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. There are times when the group will work outdoors around the borough and at our designated site.
Join this course and gain different life skills that will support you in doing everyday tasks as well as hobbies. Learners with a EHCP are welcome to join this course. Needs identified within the plan will be reviewed and your learning tailored to address them.

Learners will explore a range of topics related to horticulture and life skills, including:
Seed Harvesting
Learners will collect seeds from plants to understand propagation and growth cycles.
Soil Preparation
Learners will learn to prepare soil for planting, including assessing soil type and quality.
Sowing Techniques
Learners will practise sowing seeds effectively for different plants and conditions.
Plant and Soil Care
Learners will develop skills in watering, feeding, and maintaining healthy plants and soil.
Harvesting
Learners will harvest crops and flowers, understanding timing and techniques for optimal yield.
Healthy Eating
Learners will explore how to use harvested produce in nutritious meals.
Related Maths
Activities will include measuring, weighing, and calculating quantities related to planting and harvesting.
Related English
Learners will develop reading, writing, and comprehension skills through instructions, plant labels, and gardening guides.
Related ICT
Learners will use digital tools to track growth, plan planting schedules, and research horticulture topics.
Communication Skills
Learners will practise working collaboratively, sharing ideas, and following instructions within the group.

You will need to be able to plant and harvest. Our horticulture site is wheelchair accessible.
You will need to have the desire to be a part of a team and be prepared to work hard within your skillset with tutors and peers.
This course sits within the Life Skills Pathways for the SEND department. Upon completion of this course, you will have gained skills to undertake your own Horticulture projects.
