Bridge the seasons with this unique late-summer to early-autumn course, running for 7 weeks from the end of July until mid-September. Designed for adult learners with beginner or basic knowledge, this transitional course marks the perfect finale to the current academic year while seamlessly laying the roots for the upcoming 27/28 curriculum. Focus on the therapeutic rhythm of the late-summer abundance, enjoying the mental and physical benefits of outdoor harvesting, seed saving, and gently winding down the plot while preparing both your garden and your wellbeing for the year ahead.
This practical course bridges the gap between summer abundance and autumn preparation, covering:

Late-Summer Harvesting & Gluts: Learn the best techniques for harvesting mid-to-late summer crops at their peak, alongside simple, mindful ideas for using up abundance (such as herbs, tomatoes, and courgettes).

Beginner Seed Saving: Discover the rewarding art of collecting, drying, and storing seeds from your favourite summer flowers and vegetables to use in the next academic year.

Succession sowing for autumn, learn how to sow quick-cropping salads and leafy greens to keep your beds productive as the main summer crops fade.

Summer pruning and plant care, such as basic pruning techniques for soft fruit bushes and spent perennial flowers to keep the garden tidy and healthy.

Green Manures & Soil Protection: Introduce sustainable methods of sowing temporary cover crops (green manures) to nourish and protect bare soil over the coming months.

Looking forward to 27/28: Reflect on the year's achievements with your community of learners, sketch out future plot layouts, and transition smoothly into the next academic year's gardening cycle.
This course is planned to take place at our allotment in Cheam Village, weather permitting, we will also have some sessions taking place on site at the College.

Please bring a pen, pencil and paper to your class. Ensure you are wearing comfortable and appropriate clothing and footwear for a practical gardening.
