Looking to work in a nursery, a pre-school, a school nursery or reception class?
This qualification prepares you to become an early years educator, enabling you to work with children from birth to five years and gain knowledge of children aged five to seven years.

Upon achievement of this qualification, it is intended that learners will be able to enter the workforce as early years educators and be included in staff to child ratios. You will be able to work in a nursery, pre-school, school nursery or reception class.
The qualification has 10 mandatory units:

* Introduction to the role of the early years educator
* Holistic child development
* Children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)
* Effective communication in an early years setting
* Safeguarding and welfare requirements
* Health, wellbeing and safety
* Promoting an effective early years curriculum
* Assessment of children’s learning and development
* Understanding play for learning and holistic development
* Partnership working

You are required to produce a portfolio of evidence mapped against a set assessment criteria for knowledge and also the skills acquired during work placement experience.

You will receive ongoing feedback and will be given clear guidance on how to include all the necessary information to meet the unit criteria and improve your work.

Sessions are interactive and as well as information delivered by the course tutor will consist of discussions, group work and presentations.

The course is quite demanding. You must be prepared to study and research at home in order to progress and be able to develop your knowledge and your professionalism.

Your tutor will give you more information about the course in your first session.

Learning Aim: Z0011145 - This course will also include guidance on using Google Classroom as part of your learning experience. You will learn how to access course information, communicate and collaborate with fellow learners, submit assignments, and receive feedback from your tutor.
This is a Level 3 course.

1. You will need to have achieved the Early Years Practitioner Level 2 Diploma or the Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools Level 2 Certificate

2. You will need to be working at GCSE English Grade 3 as a minimum to access the learning and produce the assignments required.

If you do not achieve English Grade 3 in your GCSE Skills Builder Assessment you must have a UK English Level 2 qualification or above. You will be asked to provide your certificates during the Course Approval Assessment.

You must also be competent in the use of ICT in order to complete unit assignments and access course information provided online.

3. A placement in a childcare setting is required to enrol on this course. Learners will need to be working in a paid placement to be able to show competence in both knowledge and skills; this is a requirement for the achievement of this qualification.

A minimum of 350 placement hours is required throughout the course, or around 8 hours per week.

We recommend that placements should be undertaken in at least 2 different settings to cover the following age ranges:

Age Range Hours
0–1 year 11 months - 25 hours
2–2 years 11 months - 133 hours
3–5 years - 192 hours

Learners who work within a setting which provides care and education for children across these three age ranges, and are able to gain the necessary hours of experience need not seek placement outside of their setting.

You will need a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check for your work placement. If your placement is unable to fund this you may have to pay for it.

Please note that we are unable to approve you for this course without having received proof of a placement in a childcare setting.

Accepted forms of proof of a placement are a letter or email from your childcare setting confirming your placement.

PLEASE NOTE: Concessions rates may be available to those aged 19+ who do not already hold a full Level 3 qualification or have a full Level 3 qualification but are unemployed or are employed but earn below the national living wage.
