Learner Cynthia is one of millions of unpaid carers in the UK. She recently attended a ‘Looking after Older Loved Ones – A Practical Guide for New Carers’ at the College.
Her fantastic feedback below will hopefully encourage others to benefit from the free courses on offer. Each session on the course, a health, social care, or charity and voluntary sector organisation supporting unpaid carers in Sutton bring topics to help when looking after someone.
‘As a carer, I was looking for practical guidance and an opportunity to ask questions to ensure I have the knowledge necessary to provide care safely.
The session was excellent and well-paced. The hands-on approach provided valuable practical experience, and there were many opportunities to ask questions. Additionally, we were introduced to several helpful pieces of equipment and specialist aids.
I have already started to apply what I learned. The session helped me to care safely, identify incorrect handling techniques and taught me how to support my loved one without compromising their or my safety and increase their independence. The workshop provided me with increased confidence, new skills, and knowledge regarding equipment that will greatly enhance both my life and the life of my loved one.
I highly encourage Carers to join this course. It is an opportunity not to be missed, as it often reveals vital information you may not yet be aware of. Upon completing the course, you will have gained significant knowledge and confidence. This empowerment will not only support you in your role but will also greatly benefit your loved one.’
The next free course starts 3rd June, see Carers Course June 2026 or call 0208 289 4700.
Courses are run in conjunction with Sutton Carers Centre, Citizens Advice, Sutton Talking Therapies, Occupational Therapy and Admiral Nurses.
