Cooking Skills – Baking Basics – Autumn (SEND) is designed for learners with SEND who want to develop confidence in the kitchen while learning basic baking skills. The course introduces learners to simple baking techniques and helps them understand how to prepare and create a range of baked goods.
Through practical sessions, learners will follow step by step instructions to make a variety of recipes while developing independence, teamwork, and confidence. The course also supports learners in building everyday life skills that can be used at home or in future learning.
Activities are designed to be accessible and supportive, encouraging learners to enjoy cooking while developing practical kitchen skills.
Learners will develop basic baking and kitchen skills through practical activities, including:
Introduction to Baking
Learners will learn about common baking ingredients and basic equipment used in the kitchen.
Following Simple Recipes
Learners will practise reading and following simple recipes to create baked items such as cakes, biscuits, and simple pastries.
Measuring & Mixing Ingredients
Learners will practise measuring ingredients and mixing them correctly to achieve the desired results.
Kitchen Safety & Hygiene
Learners will develop an understanding of safe food handling, kitchen hygiene, and safe use of basic kitchen equipment.
Teamwork & Organisation
Learners will practise working together in the kitchen, sharing tasks and organising their workspace.
Confidence in the Kitchen
Learners will build confidence in preparing and completing simple baking tasks independently or with support.
This course is designed for learners with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities who would benefit from a practical and supportive learning environment.
No previous cooking experience is required. However, basic English and maths skills are recommended so learners can follow simple instructions, measure ingredients, and take part in practical cooking activities.
Learners must inform staff about any allergies prior to the course to ensure safe participation in cooking sessions.
Learners should have an interest in cooking and be willing to participate in practical kitchen sessions. Staff will provide appropriate support to ensure all learners can safely engage in the activities.
