Gain the skills, knowledge and an entry-level qualification to support learning in primary, secondary or special school environments, as well as colleges.

Successful completion of the course leads to a fully accredited Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools from a nationally recognised awarding organisation.
The Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning has been designed to provide learners with an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school or college environments.

It covers a wide range of areas including children and young people’s development, supporting children and young people’s positive behaviour and communication and professional relationships.

This qualification is aimed at learners working in roles that support pupils’ learning in primary, secondary or special schools, as well as colleges.

The course has 11 mandatory units. The mandatory units are:

* Understand schools and colleges as organisations
* Understand children and young people's development
* Safeguarding children and young people
* Equality, diversity and inclusion in a learning environment for children and young people
* Maintain relationships with children and young people
* Support the health and safety of children and young people
* Support positive behaviour in a learning environment for children and young people
* Contribute to teamwork in a learning environment
* Understand children and young people’s play and leisure
* Promote an effective learning environment
* Provide displays in a learning environment

The course is assessed by both the assembling of a portfolio of evidence, and the meeting of performance outcomes. Both are mapped against a set assessment criteria.

Each unit will require a written assignment.

Each assignment will be marked and you will be given clear guidance on how to include all the necessary information to meet the unit criteria and improve your work.

You will also be observed at your placement school at various times during the course.
On completion of the course, you will have demonstrated your knowledge and understanding of each topic and gained the skills needed to deliver good practice in schools.

Sessions are interactive and as well as information delivered by the course tutor will consist of discussions, group work and presentations.

The course is quite demanding. You must be prepared to study and research at home in order to progress and be able to develop your knowledge and your professionalism.

Your tutor will give you more information about the course in your first session.

Learning Aim: Z0011145 - This course will also include guidance on using Google Classroom as part of your learning experience. You will learn how to access course information, communicate and collaborate with fellow learners, submit assignments, and receive feedback from your tutor.
This is a Level 2 course.

To be eligible for this course the following is required:

1. You will need to be working at GCSE English Grade 3 as a minimum to access the learning and produce the assignments required.

If you do not achieve English Grade 3 in your GCSE Skills Builder Assessment you must have a UK English Level 2 qualification or above. You will be asked to provide your certificates during the Course Approval Assessment.

2. Please note that a placement in a school is required to enrol on this course.

You will need to be working, volunteering or on practical placement to be able to show competence in both knowledge and skills. The placement must be for at least 4 hours a week in a school in Year 1 or above. A placement in a nursery or reception class will not be accepted.

Your placement organisation is responsible for obtaining a DBS check for you so that you can work for them. They might ask you to pay for the DBS check.

Please ensure that this is in place before the start of the course so it does not hold up the start of your placement.

We are unable to enrol you on this course without having received proof of a placement in a school.

Accepted forms of proof of a placement are a letter on the school’s headed note paper or an email from your placement school confirming your placement.

Please provide proof of your placement during the course approval assessment.

3. You must also be competent in the use of ICT in order to complete unit assignments and access course information provided online.


Additional information:

Please bring a pen, paper and a ring binder folder to your class.

This course is a qualification therefore you must attend all sessions and complete all assessment tasks to the required standard.

  • Bring accepted ID in the form of either a UK passport or printout of your e-visa showing residency status

  • Ensure you meet all previous educational requirements to attend this course
  • Bring copies of previous exam certificates
