D – Pathway to Independence – Practical Independence & Community Skills – Pathway D (SEND) supports learners with SEND to develop the everyday skills needed to live more independently and participate confidently in their community.
The course focuses on practical life skills that help learners manage daily routines, make decisions, and access services in their local community. Learners will build confidence through real life scenarios, supported activities, and discussions that encourage independence and responsibility.
Through structured learning and practical tasks, learners will strengthen their ability to navigate everyday situations, communicate with others, and develop skills that support greater independence.
The course focuses on practical life skills that help learners manage daily routines, make decisions, and access services in their local community. Learners will build confidence through real life scenarios, supported activities, and discussions that encourage independence and responsibility.

Daily Living Skills
Learners will practise skills that support everyday independence, such as planning routines, organising tasks, and managing responsibilities.
Using Community Services
Learners will learn about local services and how to access them, including shops, public facilities, and community spaces.
Travel Awareness & Safety
Learners will explore basic travel awareness, understanding routes, recognising signs, and practising safe behaviour when travelling in the community.
Communication in the Community
Learners will practise speaking and listening skills that help them communicate with others in everyday situations such as asking for help, making requests, and interacting respectfully.
Decision Making & Problem Solving
Learners will take part in activities that encourage thinking through everyday situations, making choices, and solving simple problems.
Confidence & Independence
Learners will build confidence through supported tasks that encourage responsibility, participation, and independence.
Daily Living Skills

This course is designed for learners with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities who want to develop practical skills for greater independence and community participation.
Learners do not need previous experience. However, basic English and maths skills are required so learners can take part in reading, communication, and practical activities within the course.
Learners should be willing to participate in supported activities, discussions, and practical tasks that help develop independence and confidence. Staff will provide appropriate support to ensure all learners can take part successfully.
