Flower Arranging courses at Sutton College

Sutton College’s Food and Floristry Department offers a wide range of courses for the curious, hobbyist or career minded alike.  

Our team of accomplished teachers bring the skills that allow our learners to experience a wealth of new, traditional and contemporary design skills.   

 You will be taught at one of our two centres either in the main College, situated in the heart of Sutton, or in the beautiful Grade II listed former Town Hall in Wallington.

 All tutors are industry professionals themselves; having worked with some of the biggest names in the industry; some are award winners, others have run or are currently running their own businesses along with years of teaching at the highest level.  At Sutton College you will enjoy the benefits of learning in a community college with world class approaches to teaching and learning.

Floristry courses are typically run seasonally, starting with the suite of accredited courses in September at levels 1, 2 and 3 as well as the popular Foundation course. We also offer a selection of targeted workshops starting with weddings, then our very popular Christmas workshops. During the Spring term we move into a series of themed short courses ranging from Events, Weddings and Celebration Days to The Business of Floristry. The range caters for beginners; progressors; advanced and the commercially minded.  Learners and former learners are offered enrichment opportunities throughout the year working with charities, businesses, and media helping them to hone skill; build confidence and gain valuable experience whilst enhancing portfolios.

At whatever stage you start with our Floristry Department there is something else for you to move on to as we introduce new programmes throughout the year.

Our Food department offers courses from 2 hour workshops through to eight week courses in specialist design Royal Icing and Piping and Sugar Craft modelling.  You will learn techniques to develop your cake decorating skills and create masterpieces along the way. Some workshops are delivered off site in conjunction with local business Warrens Bakery. 

Our courses are for students looking to try their hand at something new through a short two hour workshop, or a longer eight week course.

Courses for 20-21 include:

Floristry Level 1 Certificate – Start a career in floristry here.  You will gain a qualification and learn the techniques needed to build an academic career in floristry.  This course offers a solid start that will be very rewarding and will be a motivating factor for moving on to do the Level 2 course.

Wedding Flowers Advanced – This course is for all skill levels.  You will learn how to construct visually impressive designs for bridal parties and venues and experience decorating the St Nicholas Gothic styled church built circa 1863.  This is an experience that will awaken your creativity.

Floristry Level 3 – This course is for the prospective professional florist wanting to go on to work at the highest levels within the industry, to teach or start your own business.  This course is an investment in a career that will repay many-fold.

Floristry for Business – Start Your Own Business – If you want to start your own floristry business working from home or a premises, you want to learn the techniques and gain the business knowledge and you need to do this in a short space of time, this course is for you.  This is a fast-paced course for the business entrepreneur. You will learn floristry alongside how to run a business; accounting, taxation, buying, marketing and pricing.

Royal Icing and Piping – These courses will incorporate the main royal icing techniques for you to learn and further develop. Sugar Artistry in the true sense of the word! Royal icing is an intricate and beautiful way to make your cakes stand out. In use for over 300 years, the once closely-guarded skill has become more widespread and modernised to help create astounding works of art. Royal Icing designs are back on trend and very much in demand, especially in the wedding industry because of its beauty and delicacy. More of a challenge than buttercream, royal icing requires knowledge of mixing consistencies to achieve much finer detail and self-supporting techniques. 

Sugar Craft Modelling –  Have you ever wanted to learn how to create Cake Toppers that will look stunning on any celebration cake? In the Sugar Craft creations and  Sugar Craft cake Modelling classes we will give you a whole host of Sugar Craft Modelling skills. You’ll go home with the confidence to create your amazing displays. This class is perfect if you’re new to Sugar Craft Modelling or want to brush up on your skills.
