General Information

This is a business skills qualification providing the stepping-stone into the world of work. It enables the learner to function in the workplace as it focuses on key business and accounting principles. This enables students to develop an understanding of how different organisations operate, how to effectively contribute effectively in the workplace and how businesses process sales and purchases. It is particularly relevant for young people and the unemployed. It covers 2 Units in a combined assessment, namely:

Working in the business environment.

Using numbers in business.

It is a gateway for level 2 qualifications such as the AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting. AAT Qualifications are recognised by employers as practical and technical qualifications that prepare students for the world of work and for working specifically in accountancy and finance roles.

What will I learn on this course?

The course covers essential skills to prepare learners for the workplace, such as the importance of teamwork, communication, effective time management and professional behaviour. Other learning outcomes include the understanding and application of business procedures to sales and purchases, how to perform simple business calculations including decimals, fractions, percentage, proportions and ratios, along with tools and techniques to present numerical data. 

The final exam is computer-based. Students will receive learning support and computer practice prior to the final exam.

All students must pay a one-off registration fee which is approximately £44.00. Please contact AAT directly for the current price that they charge as this is subject to change. This fee is paid to AAT directly by the student and not to Sutton College. Your tutor will give you information about registering on the first day of the course.

What level is this course & what skills do I need?

This course is Level 1.

You will need to have appropriate levels of English and Maths skills in order to understand and produce assignments necessary for this course. 

You must have achieved an English Language and Maths Level 1 qualification or above. This can be either GCSE grades 1, 2 and 3 or Functional Skills Level 1. You will be asked to provide your certificates during the Course Approval Assessment.

If you do not have these qualifications, then you will also be asked to do an online English Language and Maths test for the Course Approval Assessment to assess that you have the appropriate level of English and Maths in order to be accepted onto the course.

To be considered for a place on this course, you are required to complete an online Course Approval Assessment to ensure this course is suitable for you.
