General Information

Would you like to be able to communicate with deaf friends or family in British Sign Language (BSL)? Perhaps you have deaf colleagues at work or have deaf customers/service users who you meet in your job role? On this course, you will learn some of the essential basics of British Sign Language to build your knowledge and confidence. This course is ideal for those who have minimal or no current knowledge of British Sign Language and would like to develop their skills further. Please note that if you have already completed a British Sign Language Essential Basics/A Taste of British Sign Language course at Sutton College, some of the material covered in this Level 1 course will already be familiar to you.

What will I learn on this course?

Onthis course, you will learn to communicate in British Sign Language for professional reasons and/or personal enjoyment. Completion of this course will lead to a British Sign Language Level 1 Award from Signature.

On completion of this course, you will be able to-

understand and use a limited range of simple words and sentences in BSL

take part in simple, everyday conversations in BSL

give and follow simple directions or instructions in BSL

give and follow simple familiar statements or descriptions in BSL 

What level is this course & what skills do I need?

This course is Level 1 (Beginners). You do not need previous experience in British Sign Language. The course is suitable for complete beginners.

Courses at Level 2 or below may be free if you are in work, live in a London Borough and earn under £25,642.50 or are in receipt of a means tested benefit and looking for work. For further information please contact enrol@suttoncollege.ac.uk

You must be available to sit exams at Sutton College.
