This course is aimed towards our more senior learners and aims to encourage participation in learning and physical activity for those whose life is impacted by health conditions or social isolation.

,

Taking regular exercise is vitally important to our physical and mental wellbeing in our senior years. On this course, you can learn exercise techniques; skills and knowledge, which will help you, gain and maintain whole body flexibility, tone, strength, endurance, balance and coordination. 

,

What will I learn on this course?

,

The course aims to promote the health benefits of long-term adherence to an active lifestyle, through regular participation in exercise at a level suited to the individual and their distinctive needs, aspirations and goals. You will also develop your knowledge of the body and how it works, developing an understanding of the importance of keeping active.

You will learn to:

,

Warm up to mobilise joints and prepare the body for exercise.

,

Develop breathing techniques.

,

Develop your body awareness – posture.

,

Perform movements to increase and maintain muscular strength and endurance, joint flexibility, balance and agility.

,

Perform various co-ordinated moves.

,

Stretch and relax effectively.

,

Modify exercises to suit your own level.

Do I need any skills for this course?

,

This course is designed to include a mixed level of ability where your tutor will offer adaptations and progressions with each exercise movement delivered. Learners new to exercise are welcome as are those with experience.

,

Participants are encouraged to work at their own level and pace, which may vary from week to week.

,

Additional information

,

Please wear loose fitting, layered comfortable clothing suited to exercising. For example, tracksuit bottoms, active-wear leggings, t-shirts or sports vests. All exercises will be performed wearing trainers.

,

Please bring a water bottle with a secure cap.

,

You will need to bring your own exercise mat to class.

,

It is advised that learners prepare for safe practice by not eating a large meal for at least 2 hours before the class, however you may wish to eat something small prior to the start of the class to provide you with an energy boost.

What are the progression opportunities at the end of this course?

,

Following completion of the course it is recommended that continuation occur to further develop and maintain a healthy, active, wellbeing lifestyle where progression levels can be enhanced with each individual exercise taught. 

,

This course will also prepare the mind and body for a number of alternative exercise course styles.
