LLDD Presentation Evening 06/12/12
On Thursday evening, over 170 people assembled in the Arena at the Sutton Centre to celebrate the achievements of students in the Department for Students with Learning Difficulties and Disabilities. About 100 students were awarded certificates which were presented by Sutton’s Mayor, Councillor Sean Brennan, and they were cheered on by fellow students, guests, tutors, support staff and members of the Governing Body.
The Principal, Saboohi Famili, opened the evening, and welcomed those present. The Mayor then presented the certificates to the students. After the presentation, Councillor Brennan talked about his work as Mayor, and about how privileged he was to meet all the students and he congratulated them on their achievements. He shared some of his experiences of being Mayor in the year of the Diamond Jubilee and Olympics, and also talked about the recent visit of Prince Charles to the Borough.
Anne Doerr, Programme Manager for the department, thanked staff and tutors for all their hard work and a special word of thanks was given to Michele Humphreys, who retired from her role as Programme Manager in the summer. Michele was presented with a bouquet of flowers by two learners, Emily Nicholson and Diana Cruickshank, in gratitude for her 15 years’ service.
Some of the learners’ work was on display, and Christmas cards made by students were sold during the evening. It was a privilege to share in the learners’ enthusiasm and joy at receiving their certificates, and to witness their support and encouragement for one another.
