Sutton College Functional Skills English students have been running a ‘Penpal’ project with residents of local care homes in the Borough.
Students on Sutton College Functional skills courses, aware that many people in care homes may feel isolated or disconnected with the world in these difficult times, started up the project. It also gave them the ideal opportunity to practice their English and letter writing skills.
Eighteen Entry Level 1 – 3 learners started the project, led by tutor Alex Morgan, writing to residents at local residential homes St Judes, Willow Lodge and Independent Lifestyles. They wrote wonderful letters before Christmas and have since all received replies which has also helped to make them feel less isolated too this lockdown.
The cares homes said their residents were delighted to receive the letters saying:
“These are lovely!”
“This is a great idea and our residents will definitely want to take part as we worry that they can feel cut off. It’s nice to have interaction outside of our home during lockdown.”
Sutton College Vice Principal Tom Dillon said ‘This is such a positive story of the community looking after one another and a brilliant way to engage the local residents with our students’.
