Overcoming obstacles with Sutton College Additional Learning Support

23 August 2018

Sutton College offers support to students in a variety of areas including support for literacy, numeracy, ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages),study skills, dyslexia or similar difficulties and more.

In 2017 Celia, a local single mum of three children, enrolled on the Level 2 City & Guilds Floristry Certificate course after studying ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and a basic computing course at Sutton College.

Celia was assessed for Additional Learning Support and this support, both in the classroom and 1:1, together with support from her tutor made a big difference to Celia’s ability to cope with the demands of a Level 2 course.

The College also looked at her access arrangements and she was awarded extra time for all her assessments and examinations.

Overcoming difficulties with language, time-management and a busy family life Celia persevered, successfully completing the course and commented:

“I feel very proud of what I have achieved, it was very hard work. I have now been offered some voluntary work and hopefully an apprenticeship with a local flower shop”

Celia is hoping to return to Sutton College in September and would like to enrol on a computer course that will develop her skills with emails and letters to enable her to work towards her dream of starting up a home business

The College can also provide information, advice and guidance, accessibility support and financial support may also be available for help with fees, exams costs and childcare costs.
