Student Tour of Lumley Chapel in Cheam

22 February 2024

Students were treated to a tour around medieval Lumley Chapel, the oldest building in Cheam yesterday.

The tour, organised as a free workshop for Sutton College students, was led by local historian and Churches Conservation Trust Volunteer Andrew Skelton.

The chapel is part of the old pre-Victorian parish church, replaced over 150 years ago by the present St Dunstan’s Church. Now a Grade II listed building, it houses many monuments, beautiful windows and many, many tales of past local residents and their history.

One attendee said ‘Andrew’s knowledge of the history of Lumley Chapel and also the local area is amazing. He is a fantastic guide with so much knowledge and we are very lucky to have him and the chapel in the area’.

This tour was part of a suite of free workshops and enrichment sessions that are offered to Sutton College students throughout the year and another historical walk and talk, led by Andrew, will be taking place later this year through Sutton High Street. Students can register their interest for this by contacting marketing@suttoncollege.ac.uk.
